Calgary, AB: On Saturday, November 28th Generation Screwed, a student initiative of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), is holding its first Action Forum event in Western Canada. With over 100 guests expected in attendance and a lineup of 17 panelists and speakers, the forum looks to shine a light on Alberta’s exploding levels of debt and what it will mean for future generations.

“Today’s youth are tomorrow’s taxpayers and leaving future generations with a pile of debt to pay off is unethical,” said Executive Director of Generation Screwed, Aaron Gunn. “Our Generation Screwed student coordinators in Calgary have put together a great lineup of speakers to dive into Alberta’s debt problem.”

“Racking up massive deficit after massive deficit only increases our province’s interest costs and leaves less money available for important government services such as education,” said University of Calgary Generation Screwed Student Coordinator, Caitlyn Madlener. “If we don’t get our debt under control now, rising interest costs will make it even harder for us to return to balance and it will be future generations who get stuck with the bill.”

The Generation Screwed campaign is a campus initiative by the CTF to raise awareness about the growing levels of government debt and liabilities facing future generations of Canadians. Launched in 2013, the initiative already boasts 26 student coordinators at campuses across the country, including two in Calgary.

The Generation Screwed Action Forum aims to bring together leaders in public policy to discuss the challenges, and solutions, to mounting government debt, increasingly unsustainable social programs and an aging population.

“Saddling future generations with debt to pay for the political promises of the present is morally wrong,” said Mount Royal University Coordinator for Generation Screwed Andrew Yule. “Future generations of Albertans deserve to inherit a debt-free province, which is the message we will be delivering to students.”
